"First Course in Law: the Beliefs and Skills for Law Students"-Prof. Song Hualin Gave the First Lecture to Freshmen

On Sep.23rd,2022, the lecture “First Course in Law: the Beliefs and Skills for Law Students” aimed for freshmen of Law School was successfully held. This lecture is one of a series of lectures on Entrance Education for New Students. The lecture was delivered by Professor Song Hualin, Dean of Law School, and presided over by Professor Wang Qiangjun, Vice Dean of Law School. Prof. Fu Shicheng, former Dean of Law School, and Ms. Zhou Cuicui, Deputy Secretary of CPC Committee and Vice Dean of Law School, attended the meeting.



Prof. Song pointed out that law students should value the cultivation of beliefs, which includes the patriotism, the concern for public and the attention for global interests.

First, the law students should understand and serve China, and make it their mission to establish a Socialist Law-Based Country. Second, the law students should care about the legal issues in public lives. Third, the law students should have a global perspective, attach importance to the study of foreign and comparative law, and make effective use of foreign language materials in their legal studies and research.



When it refers to the academic skills for legal students, Prof. Song talked about the skills of collecting and reading literature, the skills of legal interpretation and the skills of legal writing.”The ability to read literature is fundamental to the study of the subject.”Prof.Song emphasized the need to strengthen the recording and management of collected literature by reading and taking notes. Besides, the study of legal interpretation is the foundation of jurisprudence, so it is important to refine the ability to analyze legal texts, jurisprudence and legal issues. Last, legal writing should be taken seriously, with arguments that are 'supported and justified by the supporting details' .The text should be clear and concise, with no excess paragraphs or sentences.



At the end of the lecture, the moderator, Prof. Wang Qiangjun, encouraged the students to work hard in order to fulfill the Chinese dream of great national renewal, to take advantage of the rich resources available at the Law School to train on legal techniques and put the methods taught by Prof. Song into practice.



After the lecture, the audience expressed that the “First Course in Law” had given them profound inspiration and pushed open the door of legal research from a professional perspective, which was very beneficial. In the future, the Law School will continue to implement legal education in depth, pay attention to the cultivation of students' basic skills, aimed at cultivating students with excellent professional skills and quality, and contribute to the construction of the rule of law in the new era.
